Initial Rounds7-23 April 2000
The first round is run on a two-legged knock-out basis. 50 out of the 53 member nations of CAF were drawn into five groups of ten teams each, taking sportive and geographical criteria into consideration. The three members not included are Niger (not enrolled), Burundi (withdrawn) and Reunion (non-FIFA). Five nations were seeded for each group and were drawn to play one of the unseeded nations in an elaborate procedure. The five African representatives at the 1998 finals in France - Cameroon, Morocco, Nigeria, Tunisia and South Africa - were all seeded along with 20 others. The 25 winners of the first round entered a fresh draw held in Zurich on April 28 where they were divided into five groups with the group winners qualifying for the World Cup tournament. |
