The biennual African Women's Championship
has been won by Nigeria on each occasion since its inauguration in 1998
and they were awarded the trophy for good with a new trophy designed for the
2004 tournament.
Note: the 1991 and 1995 tournaments, also won by Nigeria, were
purely World Cup qualifiers with all matches played on a
home-and-away basis.
The finalists at the 2006 African Women's Championship, which Nigeria
is hosting for a third time, will represent the continent at the 2007
World Cup finals in China.
Equatorial Guinea will host the 2008 African Women's Championship.
