Schmidt took charge in mid-January 2007 as Black Leopards' sixth coach this season after Eddie May was a no-show. May was scheduled to take charge shortly after Mlungisi 'Professor' Ngubane, previous head coach of Classic (now Maritzburg United), 'resigned' on December 23 2006 having spent 2½ months as caretaker coach.

Eddie May was Black Leopards' fifth named coach this season returning to South Africa for the first time since 2000 when he was fired after a brief stint at Bush Bucks. The former Cardiff City manager has since coached in Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi.

Ngubane assumed the reins after Kalambay Bibey Mutombo went AWOL having represented his country DR Congo as assistant coach in an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya on October 8 2006. Mutombo won just one match out of five leaving the club at 12th position with Ngubane worsening their position to 14th with only 2 wins from 8.
